Safety Information Night

As we shared in our Weekly Wednesday Update, last night we held our first community information night around student safety. The meeting focused on Internet safety, the dangers of vaping, and the impact of trauma on students academically and socially. Families attending felt the information that was presented was critical for all families to know about, so we have included the presentations with this message.

Additionally, we wanted all families to know about our new policy around vaping that was shared during Advise with students this morning. This policy was adopted from the one currently in place at Conifer High School. For a first offense of vaping on school grounds or being caught with vaping paraphernalia, students will receive an in-school suspension with a vape education assignment. For a second offense, students will be suspended out of school.

Yesterday the Food and Drug Administration declared that the use of electronic cigarettes has reached “an epidemic proportion”. Most liquid in electronic cigarettes contain high levels of nicotine and can contain other very harmful ingredients linked to lung disease, mood disorders, and difficulty with impulse control.

While measures may be taken to thwart the availability of electronic cigarettes from children in the future, the reality is this crisis makes it imperative that we as a community address it immediately. Through school accountability and other venues, we will determine how we will provide information and have dialogue with families around vaping and other safety related topics. We at the school want to partner with our families in order to keep our children safe.

Sincerely,
David Schoenhals
