Mask Guidelines

Jeffco Public Schools guidelines permit students and staff to wear cloth (fabric) face masks and disposable surgical masks. The district Face Coverings Do's and Don'ts document has additional details at www.jps.social/facemasks.

It is non-negotiable that masks MUST be worn at all times on campus. While we are aware this is a contentious issue, it is required by Jefferson County Public Health and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. Students who refuse to wear a mask or consistently have to be told to wear their mask can be asked to continue their education remotely for safety reasons.

Synchronous Attendance

Students in the 100% In-Person Learning model are expected to attend classes on campus each day Monday through Thursday. If a student is sick or cannot attend class, please call the attendance line at 303-982-3051. Students who have chosen 100% In-Person Learning will be marked absent if they are not in the school building. If they need to work remotely on a given day, please call the attendance line to have them marked 'Remote Learning Present'.

Arriving Late: Students who arrive after 7:45 AM should be accompanied by an adult family member to the main entrance and ring the doorbell (building entry buzzer) at the far right of the front doors. A staff member will bring the sign-in sheet to the door and screen the student.

Leaving During the School Day: If you need to pick up your student during the school day (e.g., for a doctor’s appointment), please call the main office at 303-982-3056 with the date and time your student needs to be released. When the adult picking up your student arrives, they should ring the doorbell (building entry buzzer) at the far right of the staff doors. Please plan to pick up your student before 1:50 PM. Picking up a student after this time will not guarantee that you will be able to get out of the parking lot due to busses.

Friday Attendance

On Fridays, students should follow the Friday schedule. They will need to check in with their teacher for each period. Some classes meet as a whole class in a Google Meet, while others may meet with small groups of students. Either way, please check your class at the allotted time for instructions and complete the assigned lesson or task for the day. Teachers will be available during the specified class periods through the class Google Meet unless otherwise stated in the Google Classroom Stream.

Homeroom Attendance

Students in the 100% Remote Learning model will need to log in and check with their homeroom teacher. Some days, students may need to stay in their homeroom for lessons, and other days the teachers may release them to work.

Student Drop-Off

Students arriving by car should be dropped off between 7:10 and 7:30 AM along the fence and the sidewalk along the field. Please do not drop your student off directly in front of the building.

Student Entrance

Students will enter at one of three locations depending on their grade level:

  • 6th grade students will enter at the main entrance doors and will be screened just inside the commons area;

  • 7th grade students will enter at the emergency exit doors at the far (west) end of the 7th grade hallway and will be screened just inside the 7th grade hall;

  • 8th grade students will enter at the emergency exit doors at the west end of the 8th grade hallway (by Mr. Cushing's classroom) and will be screened just inside the 8th grade hall.

(Link: WJMS Entry Points PDF)

While waiting in line to enter the building and be screened, students will line up six feet apart in a single file line. While students will be outside during this time, we ask that they keep masks on.

At the screening, each student’s temperature will be taken and students will be asked "Are you currently sick with a cough, sore throat, or runny nose?" Students that have any of these symptoms or a fever will be taken to an isolation room, where they will be rescreened. If they continue to have symptoms or a fever, students will need to be picked up from school.

Once a student has completed the screening, they are to go straight to their first class of the day, without mingling with students in the halls. Students will have some time there to settle in before class.

Classes that start lunch in the cafeteria will be brought to the cafeteria by their teachers. When it is time to switch, they will head outside using the recess doors (by the cafeteria) to the designated area on the field for their class.

Classes that start lunch at recess will be brought to the activities doors (by the gym) by their teachers and go to the designated area on the field for their class. Students that bring their own lunch will leave their lunches on the table by the door and pick them up when they come inside. When it is time to switch, students will head inside via the activities door (by the gym) and proceed to the cafeteria using the electives hallway that passes the band, choir, and art classrooms.

In the cafeteria: Students that bring their own lunch should wipe their area and sit in their assigned seat. Students that are eating a school lunch should wait in the appropriate line, distanced six feet apart, then proceed to wipe their area and sit in their assigned seat.

On April 5 and 6, students will be selecting their assigned seats during lunch. Students will select a seat at a table labeled with their period 3 or 6 teacher and sit at one of the sticky notes on the table (there will be four seats to choose from per table). Adults on duty will come around and write the students’ names on the seating chart for that lunch.

Students must maintain social distancing of at least 3 feet while they eat their lunch. Masks are only allowed to be off if seated in their assigned seat and eating.

At the end of lunch, students should throw away all trash and take their lunch bag (if brought from home) with them.

Student Support

We will continue to support students to the best of our abilities while adhering to district health and safety guidelines. If your student is struggling, Mr. Squires and Ms. Baker will be available in the school library during study hall hours on Tuesday and Thursday. Please schedule a time for your student to receive help and Mr. Squires or Ms. Baker will get them from their Homeroom class to work in the library. This will allow us to get students the help they need in all their classes without having to visit all their classrooms and mixing cohorts.

Study Hall during Homeroom time is a great time for students to check email, work on missing assignments, and contact teachers via email with questions or concerns.

Need to speak with a counselor?

Mr. Keane, 6th grade and 8th grade A-L, [email protected]

Mr. Enlund, 7th grade and 8th grade M-Z, [email protected]

Ms. Elio, School Social Worker, [email protected]

Ms. Baker, Social Emotional Learning Specialist, [email protected]

Departing School

If you need to pick up your student during the school day (e.g., for a doctor’s appointment), please call the main office at 303-982-3056 with the date and time your student needs to be released. When the adult picking up your student arrives, they should ring the doorbell (building entry buzzer) at the far right of the staff doors. Please plan to pick up your student before 1:50 PM. Picking up a student after this time will not guarantee that you will be able to get out of the parking lot due to busses.

We highly recommend that families picking up students that are not riding the bus come to West Jeff Middle after 2:40 PM. The significant amount of traffic created by picking up students moves much better after the busses leave around 2:20 PM.
