School News

Bus passes will be distributed during the week of September 28. While students do not currently need to have a bus pass to ride the bus, they will need to use them starting immediately after they receive their pass. Jeffco Transportation will be using ZPass, a system that uses RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) to record and securely store information on when, where, and what time students get on and off school buses, helping to assure their safety. This information is only available to transportation and school staff.

Students will receive their initial ZPass card free of charge. If your student forgets or loses their card, they will not be denied transportation to and from school. Replacement cards can be purchased through the school. If you have any questions about the ZPass card or system, please contact our local Jeffco Transportation location, West Terminal, at 303-982-5215.

October Count Day this year is tomorrow, Thursday, October 1. Much of public education funding from the state of Colorado is based on student count. Please help us ensure an accurate count by having your student participate in learning that day, either in-person or online. If your student will be absent on October 1 due to illness, please call our attendance line, 303-982-3051, to report the absence. Attendance during the count window (September 24 through October 8) will help counteract an absence on October 1.

The window for families to request a change in their student's learning environment for second trimester, which begins on November 16, is open October 1-14. Families that would like to move their students from remote to hybrid or hybrid to remote are asked to complete the Learning Model Request 2nd Trimester form. If you do not wish to make any changes, then you do not need to complete the form.

The Pride Alliance will begin weekly virtual meetings on Thursday, October 8 from 2:30 - 3:00 pm. Students interested in joining the group's Google Classroom may contact Mrs. Escheman (Woods) at The Pride Alliance creates a safe space for students to share the message of community and acceptance for all people.

On the afternoon of Monday, September 28, West Area Transportation notified families that the bus service stoppage has been extended through October 9. Bus services are now expected to resume on Monday, October 12. If you cannot make other transportation arrangements for this time period, please contact the school about your student participating in remote learning during the interruption in bus service and/or supports to receive grab and go school meal services.

Our school picture days will be October 12 for students in Group A and October 13 for students in Group B. Photo day information for remote students will be announced later. Families have the ability to order pictures online by visiting and searching for our school’s name or by going directly to our picture day page. Order packets will also be available in the main office.

Our block days will be shifted the week of October 12 due to fall break. Monday, October 12 will be a Blue A day; Tuesday, October 13 will be a Silver B day; and Wednesday, October 14 will be a remote learning day. There will be no school for students on Thursday, October 15 and Friday, October 16.

Virtual parent-teacher conferences will be by appointment during the evening on Tuesday, October 13, and during the day on Wednesday, October 14. Conferences can be scheduled on the SignUpGenius for October 13 and the SignUpGenius for October 14. You may select your student's teachers by subject area on the tabs at the top of the SignUpGenius page. Meetings are scheduled in 10-minute intervals. Any times teachers are not available will be indicated on the SignUpGenius.

  • If you have a specific concern(s) you wish to discuss at conferences, please e-mail the teacher to ensure your message gets to them. Any comments left with a booking in SignUpGenius are visible to the public.

  • If you would like to problem-solve and/or discuss ways to support your child’s learning both in-person and remote, please sign up for a time slot to meet with one of our counselors.

  • If you need some support to find your student's teachers and sign up for conference slots, please watch the October Conference Sign-Up Video.

Office Reminders

We understand that the block schedule for hybrid learning can be confusing, especially on weeks where the block days are shifted. When students arrive at school on days they are not scheduled to attend in-person, please know that we are unable to keep the student at school for the day due to COVID safety mitigation measures. If for some reason this occurs, the school office will notify families to pick up students at their earliest possible convenience. If you are ever unsure of which day your student(s) should be coming to school, please check the block days schedule on our website or call the school office.

Grab and Go Lunch Pickup is offered on Tuesdays, Wednesdays (for students in hybrid learning Group A), and Thursdays. Students in hybrid learning will be able to pick up three days of take home meals on their second day of in-person learning each week. Students in 100% remote learning will be able to pick up two days of meals on Tuesdays and three days of meals on Thursdays each week. Meal pickup is from noon to 1 pm.

2020-2021 student fees are ready for families to pay. You may pay online by going to Jeffco Connect, then Jeffco Student Fees. (Sixth grade families participating in the King Soopers Lab Card Program are asked to not pay for Outdoor Lab until your credit has been applied to your fee. The Lab Card Program will continue until December.) If you have any questions or concerns about student fees, please contact Debbie Jessee at

Families interested in receiving a bag of non-perishable food each week to help over the weekend may complete and send in the form linked below or contact counselor Craig Enlund at 303-982-3062 or to request enrollment. There are no requirements to qualify for the program. Bags are delivered every week throughout the school year, beginning the week after a family enrolls, and the bags are delivered without identifying or singling out recipients.

Fall MAP Testing

Fall MAP testing is underway with students taking MAP Math assessments during their normally-scheduled Math periods.

Hybrid learners in all grades will take MAP Reading assessments during their normally-scheduled English/Language Arts periods the week of October 5-8. They will have independent, asynchronous assignments to complete on their days at home.

All students are required to take the MAP assessments on a school-owned device. If your student does not currently have a school-issued Chromebook, please email Amy Gutierrez Baker at to make arrangements to get a device checked out to your student prior to your student's scheduled testing.

Any questions about MAP testing at West Jeff Middle may be directed to assistant principal Tricia Samuelson at or instructional coach Caity Mergendahl at

Clash of the Classrooms

Are you ready for a fun school fundraiser with zero sales? Our PTA is organizing a Clash of the Classrooms that will kick off October 19th! Homeroom classes will compete to raise funds through donations throughout the month. Awards will include weekly prizes for top donations per grade, a grand prize at the end of the month for the top fundraising class in each grade, and a gift card for the homeroom teacher whose class raises the highest value in donations.

Our classrooms have an immediate need for technology to support teachers' delivery of virtual and in-person teaching, including spare power chargers for Chromebooks, video cables to use secondary displays, and audio accessories such as headsets and amplifiers. Any funds left after meeting those needs will be used for other needs at our school.

More information will be relayed to families in the coming days via SchoolMessenger and posted on the Fundraising page on the school website.

PTA News

Thank you to everyone that was able to join us for our first PTA meeting of the year! We anticipate publishing the minutes to the PTA website next week. The October PTA meeting will take place at 6 pm on Tuesday, October 20th via Zoom. The meeting link will be sent to families via SchoolMessenger on Monday, October 19.

Our PTA helps the school provide opportunities for our students and staff through funding, classroom grants, and volunteer service. One simple way you can support PTA's mission is with your paid membership:

Our fall membership drive runs through October 1st, so we appreciate if you join by then! While you may join at any time during the school year, we report our membership to Colorado PTA on October 1 and February 1 each year.

Make lunch or dinner plans on Wednesday, October 7th to dine in at or order carryout from JJ Madwell's for a PTA Restaurant Fundraiser to help our school! All orders that mention West Jeff Middle School between 11 AM and 8 PM will have a portion of the sale donated to our PTA.

Our teacher appreciation committee is organizing box lunches for staff during conferences on Wednesday, October 14. If you are interested in donating, please contact the board at

As always, you are welcome to follow PTA on Facebook to stay in the loop about school and community events and contact the PTA board by e-mail at
