School News

Our Virtual Back-to-School Night mini-site was published on the afternoon of September 1st. We published the site in lieu of holding an in-person Back to School Night, allowing everyone to meet the teachers, staff and administrators from a safe distance and on their own time frame.

Due to the Labor Day holiday, our block days will be shifted the week of September 7. Students in Group A will be on campus Tuesday, September 8 and Thursday, September 10, and students in Group B will be on campus Wednesday, September 9 and Friday, September 11. There will be no late start remote learning day with all class periods that week. Please see our block day schedule for fall 2020 to see which days your student will be on campus.

The School Accountability Committee Zoom meeting scheduled for Monday, September 14 has been canceled. Their next meeting will be Monday, October 12. The August minutes are published on the School Accountability Committee page of the school website.

Tasks to Prepare for Hybrid Learning

With the start of hybrid learning on Tuesday, September 8th, we will have half of our students in the building for the first time since March 13th. We are so excited to see them again! We have some things families will want to do before students return to school or continue remote learning.

Students who will be 100% remote will need to pick up math workbooks and – for students taking Art as an elective this trimester – an art kit. The workbooks and art kits may be picked up at the school on Friday, September 4th from 9:00 am - 12:00 pm. Families may call ahead or simply pick up their student's material from the staff member at a table outside. If this time does not work for you, please email Julie Barrett at to arrange pickup at another time.

Please look through the WJMS Health and Safety Expectations. Teachers will also be going over these guidelines with students. Each measure described in the Restart Jeffco plan on the district website will be implemented to our greatest abilities.

Please read through the Online Learning Expectations with your student. Expectations for online learning are more rigorous this year. Students will experience both synchronous and asynchronous learning environments. All online classrooms are run through Google Classroom and currently use Google Meets as their virtual meeting platform.

When students are in Google Meets and interacting with their peers and the teacher, adults are welcome to do a quick check to ensure their child is logged in but they should not sit in on the entire lesson or meeting in Google Meets. If you have questions or concerns about the lesson or learning task, please contact the teacher directly through email or a phone call. It is important that all our students feel comfortable interacting in the online classroom.

As we move into hybrid learning, assignments will still be in Google Classroom since we cannot have shared physical resources. Students will need to have their charged Chromebook with them at school for in-person days during hybrid learning. Please complete the 7th and 8th Grade Chromebook Checkout Form if your student needs a Chromebook. Students will be given their Chromebook and charger on their first in-person day at our school. All 6th grade students should already have a Chromebook through TechForEd, the district's 1:1 technology program. Please contact digital teacher-librarian Amy Gutierrez Baker at if you have any questions.

Students who will be riding the bus to school will notice a difference when they board in the morning. If you need information about bus routes and times, please use Infofinder for bus route information or contact the Jeffco Public Schools Transportation West Terminal at 303-982-5215.

Breakfast and Lunch at WJMS

West Jeff Middle School will now be offering breakfast service! Students will pre-order their breakfast and lunch for each day they are on campus. Please do not order lunches any earlier than the Saturday prior to the week you are ordering for - for example, you would not want to order school meals for the week of September 14 before Saturday, September 12.

Each student who has ordered a breakfast will receive their prepackaged breakfast after their entrance screening. If a student has not ordered breakfast prior to arrival, meals will be available upon request but without the food choices offered when ordering in advance. Staff members will deliver the prepackaged breakfasts to each student in their classrooms.

Lunches will be handled in a similar way. Students will be asked to pre-order their lunches no later than the evening before school. Again, students who do not preorder may still receive a lunch, but will not have an option in what they receive for lunch that day.

Students may always bring their own lunches to school. Refrigeration and microwaves are not available for student use. Students will be expected to keep their lunches with them in their backpacks throughout the school day.

Medication Drop Off Information

If your student requires medications such as inhalers, epinephrine auto-injectors, seizure medications, or over-the-counter medications to be kept in the health room, please plan to drop them off on the first day of school next week. Tammy Boyd, our district nurse, will be outside to collect any medications.

All medications must be supplied in the original pharmacy container label stating the student's name, name of medication, dosage, route and number of doses per day, times of administration and date of discontinuance if applicable.

Please be sure to include a medication agreement form signed by your physician for any over-the-counter medications and/or a Colorado Standardized Care Plan for asthma, allergy/anaphylaxis, or seizure as appropriate.

If you cannot drop off your student's medications on the first day, please email or call Nurse Tammy to schedule an appointment. Please feel free to reach out to her with any questions or concerns:
